Read: All because Salman Rushdie wrote a book But also, after so many years, of course I would appear onstage with him: Was anyone really that worked up about Salman Rushdie, or even about novels, anymore? Wasn’t the Satanic Verses controversy just receding history, useful only as a stellar reference point for demonstrating one’s literary-political bona fides?īut now we have this answer to those questions. Of course I would appear onstage with Rushdie: My own commitments to freedom of expression and to the higher goods of literature matter more to me than any concern for my personal safety-and appearing with Rushdie, of all people, was about as clear and assured a sign of this as one could give. Every time I took part in one of these, my mother would tell me to be careful. Over the years, I have interviewed Rushdie at public events in Toronto and New York, and hosted him for events associated with PEN Canada and the University of Toronto. Unfortunately for Wallace, they get their wish. He has no friends, and his employees wish he were dead. He’s an entitled, unsympathetic lawyer, and an even worse boss who cares for no one but himself as Klune describes him: “When he said jump, he expected those within earshot to do just that without asking inconsequential questions like how high?” In Under the Whispering Door, we are introduced to Wallace Price, an unlikeable narrator who is certainly not difficult to hate. ![]() This premise is what author TJ Klune’s readers gushed over when reading his 2020 release The House in the Cerulean Sea, and it’s what they can expect again from his most recent publication hitting shelves this month, Under the Whispering Door. It ends.Īs I write this on a lovely spring afternoon and glimpse out the window the miracle of my old weeping cherry tree cascading pink blossoms, after having spent many happy hours studying and recollecting and missing James, I am reminded of a line, now full of new meaning, from "The Last Story" in " George and Martha Encore." Out of love for Martha, and to ease her misery over her messy garden, George stuffs store-bought tulips into the ground. And that love was particularly evident in the forward Maurice wrote for a George and Martha collection that was published in '97. Maurice loved James with all the heart a person could possibly muster for a friend. It is my son's favorite Sendak-illustrated book, written by one of Maurice's best friends and the finest children's book author to ever be born in Texas.
